The project includes intersection improvements at two sites: US-421 at Peace Haven Road, and US- 52 at NC-65. These intersection improvements will facilitate the future Northern Beltway around the city of Winston-Salem. The project requires the construction of bridges, ramps, and tolls, as well as roughly 562,000 cubic yards of earthwork placement. Originally valued at just under $44 million, the value has increased since the start of construction to $54 million because of change orders. Project Manager Matt Adams says that so far, the project has presented several challenges, the biggest of which has been phasing construction around existing traffic patterns of high-volume roadways. Maintaining compliance with erosion control standards for high-quality water features has been a priority as well.
Completion of the project is scheduled for June 27, 2020.
