I-85 Cabarrus County Widening

This contract with the N.C. Department of Transportation includes adding four travel lanes (two in each direction) to an 8-mile stretch of I-85 in Cabarrus and Rowan counties to improve traffic flow in the area.

The project consists of two different sections:

• Work on the first section stretches from Exit 55 to Exit 63 in Cabarrus County, ending just north of Moose Road in Rowan County.

• The second section begins north of Moose Road and ends near the Old U.S. 29/U.S. 601/I-85 Connector in Rowan County.

The work will complete the expansion of I-85 through Cabarrus and Rowan counties. Without these improvements, traffic volumes are predicted to increase each year and exceed capacity by 2035.

Project Highlights:

• Structures built – 18 (17 bridges, 1 pedestrian culvert)
• Miles of road widened – 8 miles of I-85
• Dirt moved – over 919,800 cubic yards
• Storm Drain – over 80,144 ft laid
• Noise wall – 283,930 SF of wall
