Blythe Awarded North Carolina’s First Design-Build-Finance Project

June 17th, 2010

Blythe Construction was awarded the 5.1 mile extension of Charlotte’s urban interstate loop, I-485, which extends from Old Statesville Road to I-85. Blythe will build the highway as a Design-Build-Finance project. Under this model, Blythe Construction accepted an extended payment schedule, securing funds if necessary. Therefore, Blythe will complete the project in four and a half years and North Carolina will pay the company over five and a half years.

Work on the $140 million contract is slated to be complete by late December 2014. Work includes 3.4 million cubic yards of mass grading, 17 bridges, 5 box culverts, 500 thousand square yards of concrete paving and 225 thousand tons asphalt paving.

Blythe’s Highway 601 Project Already a Success: Serious accidents down 67% and no fatalities in the work zone

November 5th, 2009

After two years of construction, the Highway 601 project is achieving the N.C. Department of Transportation’s and Blythe Construction, Inc’s safety goals.

Blythe Construction wanted no fatalities and fewer serious accidents during construction of the 11 mile stretch of highway. And two years into the project, these goals are being reached!

The NC Department of Transportation’s accident statistics show no fatal accidents. The number of injuries requiring hospitalization has been reduced by an annual 67 percent compared to the five years immediately prior to construction. Heavy vehicle accidents have been reduced by 68 percent.

How did we do it?

Blythe Construction implemented the N.C. Department of Transportation’s proposed new 2010 work zone traffic control procedures and asked for help from the local sheriff’s department. They increased patrols and maintained a very visible presence during lane closures and traffic switches. Cooperative efforts by the N.C. Department of Transportation Resident Engineer Dennis Cloud and Blythe Construction Project Manger Wayne Ramsey ensured they met their desired results by using innovative ways to reduce risks in the active work zone.

Blythe’s Safety Program Nationally Recognized

November 15th, 2007

Blythe Construction received national recognition at the AGC (Associated General Contractors) of America’s 88th annual convention last year. Blythe (whose safety program was given an award by the local branch of AGC earlier in the year) was given the National Construction Safety Excellence Award for a highway division with 700,000 to 1 million man hours.

In order to be a finalist in this award, Blythe had to achieve zero work site fatalities and have their safety program examined by the AGC. Blythe was judged on the success of their training programs, work site hazard identification and control, and safety program innovation.

Congratulations again to our safety team and to everyone who makes safety a number one priority.

Blythe Construction Wins Carolinas AGC Excellence in Safety Award

July 10th, 2007

Blythe Construction was recently chosen as first place winners of the Eighth Annual AGC (the Associated General Contractors) Excellence in Safety Award. Blythe won the first place award in the category of Highway Division with More than One Million Man Hours.

According to Kenneth Boggs, MS, ASP, Director, Safety Services for Carolina’s AGC, Blythe’s safety program “was chosen not only for their programs they have in place, or for their reduction in accident and workers compensation costs, but for their numerous statistical data tools to measure and clearly show their progress and success.”

The award program is an ongoing and evolving effort by the AGC of America to recognize companies that have developed and implemented excellent safety and loss prevention programs achieved through management commitment, employee training and program innovation.
